Dying Light Codexery

Old City

A district of Villedor where parkour and survival define every rooftop and alley.

The Old City is a district within the walled European city of Villedor, the setting of Dying Light 2 Stay Human. It is one of the seven distinct regions of the massive urban open world, which is four times bigger than the first game. The Old City features its own landmarks and locations, and players can explore it freely, scavenging for scrap and resources to craft new items and weapons. Activating windmills in the area attracts survivors and merchants to set up settlements. The district is part of the larger conflict between factions like the Peacekeepers, Survivors, and Renegades, and player decisions here can fundamentally change the state of the game's world and how non-playable characters view the protagonist, Aiden Caldwell.

Lore & Background

The Old City is one of the seven distinct regions that make up Villedor, a walled European city that survived the THV pandemic thanks to its quarantine walls keeping hordes of infected out. Control of the city is split between several factions, including the militaristic Peacekeepers, the independent Survivors, and the violent Renegades. The Old City, like other regions, has its own landmarks and locations that players can explore. The game's map is four times bigger than the first Dying Light, and the Old City is part of that expanded world. Players can activate windmills in the district to attract survivors and merchants, setting up new settlements. The area is shaped by the player's choices, as making certain decisions can open up or seal off areas, encouraging multiple playthroughs. The Old City is a key part of the struggle between factions, where Aiden Caldwell, a Pilgrim searching for his lost sister Mia, must navigate the dangers of the infected and the politics of the survivors.

In Their Own Story

Aiden Caldwell, a Pilgrim traveling between human settlements, makes his way to Villedor in search of his lost sister, Mia. After being bitten by a Volatile and becoming infected with THV, he is directed to the Fish Eye in the Central district, but his journey takes him through the Old City. There, he encounters the Bazaar, a large settlement run by a group called the Survivors. Aiden is nearly killed due to his lack of a biomarker, but is saved by Hakon, a former Nightrunner. Hakon explains that tensions are high due to the recent murder of a high-ranking Peacekeeper officer, Lucas, and that the Peacekeepers believe the Survivors are responsible. Aiden can choose to side with the Bazaar's leaders, Carl and Sophie, or with Aitor, an officer of the Peacekeepers, both promising to smuggle him into the Central District. Regardless of his choice, Aiden discovers that Hakon killed Lucas on Waltz's orders. The Old City is where these early conflicts unfold, setting the stage for Aiden's search for Mia and his confrontation with Waltz.

Reader's Guide

The Old City is a key area for meeting different factions and making decisions that fundamentally change the state of the game's world. Players can choose to side with the Survivors or the Peacekeepers, and these choices affect how non-playable characters view Aiden. Making certain decisions can open up or seal off areas in the city, encouraging multiple playthroughs. The Old City is also where players first encounter the Bazaar, a large settlement run by the Survivors, and where the conflict over the murder of Peacekeeper officer Lucas begins.
